Mandalay Bay Sues Vegas Shooting Victims

KENNESAW, Georgia. A man used one of Mandalay Bay’s hotel rooms to perform the worst mass shooting in American history. Should the hotel be held responsible for the shooting? The victims seem to believe so, with some of the victims of the Las Vegas shooting putting the hotel on notice that they intend to pursue a lawsuit.

However, the hotel has taken matters into its own hands, and is facing major backlash on social media for it.

In an effort to avoid liability, Mandalay Bay is choosing to sue the Vegas shooting victims. The tactic has many critics disgusted with the company’s tactics, with Newsweek reporting that many social media users have vowed to boycott MGM Resorts, the company that owns Mandalay Bay.

While the lawsuit isn’t seeking money from the victims. Instead, the company hopes that the lawsuit will absolve it of any claims the victims might make. The company intends to use the 2002 Safety Act to avoid lawsuits. The law protects companies from lawsuits if a terrorist attack occurs and if the company uses protection services approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. However, MGM’s lawsuit will hinge on whether a court determines that the mass shooting was an act of terrorism. The law has not been tested in court, and some experts believe that courts will not characterize the Vegas shooting as an act of terrorism. Yet, if MGM is successful, we might see more companies pursue lawsuits against shooting victims so that they can protect themselves from lawsuits when these tragedies occur.

Some victims of the mass shooting have expressed their intention to sue MGM. They claim that the hotel failed to provide proper security and permitted the gunman to bring his weapons into the hotel room.

One of the lawyers who represents victims of the Vegas mass shooting told news outlets that he believes that this is an attempt on the company’s part to intimidate victims.

Mass shootings have been on the rise in the U.S., with the U.S. seeing more mass shootings than any other developed country. Victims and families have spoken up, asking for tighter gun laws. In the absence of better regulation of gun ownership, some families have decided to fight back by suing companies, schools, and venues where the shootings took place, citing a lack of security or a lack of proper prevention measures.

Mass shootings continue to be a serious issue. Families and victims may suffer immense damages and losses after a shooting. Because families cannot sue gun companies due to protections these companies have, premises lawsuits are often another avenue to help families seek justice and get compensation to cover their medical expenses, lost wages, rehabilitation, and pain and suffering.
